The White Mountains would be my next challenge. |
When I rode into Springerville, I didn't know I would be staying there so long, but I planned to take a  day off after fighting headwinds and closed motels in western New Mexico. At least I would get acclimated to the altitude. |
This was Main Street, with the White Mountains rising in the distance. |
Perhaps the most prominent sight in Springerville was the Madonna of the Trail, one of 12  that were erected in honor of pioneer women. This was the third one I had seen, the others being in Illinois and California. |
This inscription was on the back of the statue. For an excellent web site about the Madonna of the Trail, click here. |
Springerville placed descriptive stones near many of its historic sites. |
At Stuart Books I was amazed to find two cyclotouring books and several other interesting titles. Note the sign on the left: " Pet hitching post." |
Lil' Ranglers Restaurant was close to my motel so I ate there several times. The food was just so-so. |
