Roswell, NM Photos, Part I

Roswell was the " Dairy Capital of the Southwest," but tourists weren't coming to look at cows or drink milk.

With  50,000 people, Roswell seemed like a big city compared to the small towns I'd visited for the past few weeks. New Mexico's state historic markers were sparse compared to Texas--generally there was only one for an entire town.

The first motel at the south end of town was El Capitan.

The sign depicted Capitan Peak, a 10,083 foot-high mountain about 40 miles west of Roswell.

I took this picture for my friend who used to work at Arby's. I don't know if she ever served any aliens, though.

I bought a new front tire at Roswell Schwinn. This sign reminded me of the movie E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial.

And there's my bike (the one on the sidewalk) with fresh rubber.

The Crane Motel on U.S. 70/380 had a distinctive sign.
