Ride 43: Where's the Bridge?

Biking Illinois: 60 Great Road Trips and Trail Rides

Order here:

Springfield, IL         July 7, 2005

I rode the Lost Bridge Trail in December 2004, but I didn't take enough pictures because it was so cold. Despite a stiff breeze, I attempted to use a voice recorder to narrate the ride. The wind noise was so annoying that I decided to take written notes for future rides instead.

I returned on a summer evening to shoot most of the photos below. I still didn't take enough pictures, but I only needed one good shot for Biking Illinois.

The bridge over Sugar Creek is the architectural highlight of the trail.

Illinois was experiencing a drought in 2005, as evidenced by the low water level of Sugar Creek.

This is a typical view of the tree-lined asphalt path.

These flowers were blooming along the path, but I don't know what they are.

The only photo from December 2004 (notice the leafless trees) shows the eastern end of the Lost Bridge Trail. Someday the trail could be extended to Taylorville and Pana on this right-of-way. The ride described in Biking Illinois doesn't go as far as this dead end, though.
