Ride 15: Frolic Along the Fox

Biking Illinois: 60 Great Road Trips and Trail Rides

Order here:

Elgin, IL         July 1, 2005

When I was in college, I used to ride on the Fox River Trail often, but I never made it this far north (I used to turn around at South Elgin). This ride combines the northern part of the Fox River Trail in Kane County with the Prairie Trail in McHenry County.

I decided to start the ride in Tyler Creek Forest Preserve because it's easy to find from I-90 using the Route 31 exit.

Another benefit of starting at Tyler Creek is crossing this cool bridge built on the support piers of the I-90 bridge. This shot is from the southwest, approaching the bridge.

And here's a look at the bridge from the other side, the southeast:

Much of the Fox River Trail is pleasantly wooded.

These views are from the trail bridge in Algonquin (I think; I'm writing this five years later).

This huge gravel plant operates right next to the trail.

A rail line runs beside the trail in Crystal Lake.

Though these tracks are inactive, for some reason there is a dangerous crossing built into the trail here.

This is at the county line on the return trip (entering Kane County).
