Ride 2: Are You in Shape for Schapville?

Biking Illinois: 60 Great Road Trips and Trail Rides

As I mentioned in " Hellacious Hills of Hanover," I wanted to feature the terrain Galena is known for without that town's  congestion. Elizabeth is southeast of Galena on US 20 and features Apple River Fort State Historic Site, a tourist attraction that happens to include plenty of parking. At the visitor center, you can learn about the fort and the Blackhawk War, as well as take advantage of the indoor restrooms and browse in the gift shop. The fort is a short walk, drive, or ride up a paved road behind the building.

The highlight of Schapville is Zion Presbyterian Church, built in 1886.

Back in Elizabeth, you'll pass by the Chicago Great Western Railway Depot Museum.
