Selma Photos, Part I

Welcome to Selma: " Civil War to Civil Rights and Beyond."

Selma, city of many signs.

" You're welcome."

The Battle of Selma in April 1865 was one of the last fights in the Civil War. This monument marked the former site of the Selma arsenal, the reason the town  was attacked--it was the second largest producer  of war materials in the Confederacy.

The St. James Hotel first opened in 1837.

The Phoenix Building had a neat old facade, but notice that there was nothing but open air behind it.

This commemorated a visit to Selma by General Lafayette, the French hero of the American Revolutionary War, in 1825  .

Yet another monument remembered Lieutenant John T. Melvin, the first American Naval officer killed in World War I on November 5, 1917.
