Day Sixty-Six Photos, Part III

Amboy Crater, an extinct volcano, was a relatively popular place to visit. I didn't climb it this time, but I can offer a little tip from my ascent eleven years ago--that path visible on the right (the north side)   is not the easy way. When I got to the top I found a much more gentle slope on the west side.

This was one of the very few things that did change since my last time through--the BLM erected this sign.

The pavement was  badly deteriorated just west of Amboy. Also, notice that this stencil is a bit different from the one on the first page of today's photos. That one said " Route 66" with rounded numerals while this one says " Historic U S 66" with squared sixes.

In this view of Amboy Crater, one can see where the black lava field meets the desert sand.

Where the lava field was nearest the highway, it looked similar to  the Valley of Fires near Carrizozo, NM (see Day 44 photos).

After 90 miles on the saddle, this rough, cracked  pavement was not a welcome sight!

The freight trains kept me company much of the way from Amboy to Ludlow.

Although I was awfully tired, I just had to laugh when I saw this. I imagined the engineer calling to the train ahead, " Hey, wait, you forgot one!"

Here is another shot of the one-car train.
