Marfa, Texas

Marfa is a dusty West Texas town with several claims to fame:

  1. The Marfa Lights - Spooky, unexplained lights occasionally appear in the night sky east of town.
  2. The epic movie Giant starring Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson, and James Dean was filmed in the Marfa area in 1955.
  3. Marfa is the home of the highest golf course in Texas.

The Presidio County Courthouse stands at the head of the downtown commercial district (rather than in the middle).

This photo of the 1886 courthouse was taken looking northeast.

This close-up shows the blue dome.

The colors and style of the nearby jail complement those of the courthouse.

Downtown Marfa once had two movie theatres.

Neither showed movies as of March 2003.

The Hotel Paisano is a National Historic Landmark.

This is the First Christian Church.

In March 2003, only the sign remained for the Stardust Motel on US 90.

The Marfa National Bank has unusual ornamentation for an adobe style building.
